Updated September 2026. ChatGPT Atlas is no longer a current browser recommendation. OpenAI discontinued the standalone Atlas browser and scheduled it to stop working on August 9, 2026 as browser-based agentic capabilities moved into ChatGPT and Codex.
OpenAI introduced Atlas in October 2025 as a web browser with ChatGPT built in. It could summarize pages, answer questions about content and support agent-style web tasks. The original release was available on macOS, with additional platforms discussed for later.
Chrome remains an actively maintained general-purpose browser. Atlas is discontinued, so speed, extension support and feature comparisons are no longer the deciding issue. Security maintenance is. OpenAI advised users to move to a supported browser experience because discontinued browsers can degrade or stop receiving security updates.
AI browsers can act on page content, which creates prompt-injection risk. OpenAI published work on hardening Atlas, but no agentic browser can eliminate every risk. Review actions before allowing an AI system to send information, change accounts, make purchases or access private services.
Atlas was an important experiment, but it should not be downloaded or recommended in 2026. Existing users should export their data and move to a maintained browser. Readers looking for AI-assisted browsing should consult OpenAI’s current ChatGPT and Codex documentation because features and availability continue to change.
